Massimo Botocci, mayor of a Northern Italian Town announced a ban on the selling of sandwiches and kebabs because he considered them being smelly and that they were not part of the Italian tradition. He cited health and sanitary regulations to justify the bans and further adds that people who want to eat a kebab can prepare it at home or outside of the historic centre. It seems that the biggest concern which the Mayor has with kebabs lies in the fact that it is not part of the history and tradition of the country.
This is not the first time that we hear of this mayor who is reputed for his other unusual regulations and bans. In 2009, Botocci made headlines when he put forward measures regarding beggars and street sellers and parking restrictions which were imposed on caravans.
The anti immigration Northern League mayor also proposed mandatory public service for minors caught drinking alcohol.
