Degrees of Separation Shortened

According to a recent study on social networking-the largest study to have been done so far-it has been found that 92% of people could be only four people away from being friends.  The study was conducted on social networking website Facebook by researchers from the Università degli Studi di Milano.

The results of the study suggest that irrespective of the place a person is, he could be a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend.  Previously it was held that there was six degrees of separation between people but this one claims that people could be closer to each other than what they previously thought.  When the research is confined to local level or for single countries, the degrees of separation get even smaller.  For example in single country cases, most pairs of people are separated by 3 degrees only which makes the world appear even smaller.

The study reinforces Facebook pledge to connect people irrespective of where they are in the world and brings people closer.

With social networking and the internet, the world is getting smaller than ever. We will tend to know people outside our own circle sometimes just because he or she is our friend’s friend.

  2. Georgiana says:

I can’t connect with the facts, please provide some examples. The degrees are confusing me as I am not really good in Math. I wonder why do we need to calculate that when quality matters more than quantity.
