Ever wondered what was the loudest purr of any cat? It’s actually 67.7 dB (LA peak) and it was achieved by a domestic cat called Smokey from Northampton, UK, on 25 March 2011. The cat is owned by Lucinda Ruth Adams and the record was achieved in the owner’s house where the cat felt most relaxed, at ease and happy.
The measurement was made in the presence of a vet, a local MP, sound engineer and a representative of Northampton Cats Protection and was made by Class 1 sound level meter NA-28 by RION. The measurement was taken at a one metre distance and the goodies used during the recording were a grooming brush, slices of ham as well as lots of stroking by hand.
