Tragic ‘Freak Accident’ Claims Life in Yarrawonga | Wangaratta Chronicle

A tragic incident unfolded in Yarrawonga as a ‘freak accident’ claimed the life of a 45-year-old man on the evening of November 26. The unfortunate event occurred on the Loop Track within Yarrawonga Regional Park when a large tree branch fell, fatally striking the man while leaving his wife and teenage son injured around 7:10 pm.

Sergeant Shaun Hillier from Wangaratta Highway Patrol revealed that the family was driving out of the Loop Track to evade an approaching storm when the tree branch unexpectedly fell onto their moving vehicle. The man succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while his wife and son managed to exit the vehicle before receiving medical attention. The injured family members were subsequently transported to Wangaratta hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.

Expressing condolences to the family, Sgt. Hillier emphasized that the family had done nothing wrong and were simply trying to navigate to safety amidst the storm. He highlighted the unpredictability of such incidents in storm-prone areas like Yarrawonga, terming it a “terrible accident.”

Authorities are set to compile a detailed report for the coroner outlining the events leading up to the tragic fatality. The community has been urged to support the affected family during this difficult time.
