Florida Judge Faces Suspension for Misconduct and Inappropriate Jokes

A Florida circuit court judge in Broward County, Gary M. Farmer Jr., is facing suspension after an advisory panel to the state Supreme Court found him unfit for office due to a series of issues, including telling what were described as “exceptionally bad jokes,” displaying bias, and poor attendance. The Investigative Panel of the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission (FJQC) made the decision to suspend Judge Farmer without pay, effective next week, pending a disposition hearing.

The suspension was recommended by the FJQC about a month ago, following an investigation that began in October 2024 into comments made by Farmer. The panel found probable cause to continue the investigation after a hearing in December 2024, uncovering instances where Farmer made inappropriate remarks that tarnished the public perception of the judiciary. According to the allegations, Farmer made disparaging comments during court proceedings, including mocking a defendant expecting three children with different women.

During one felony case, Farmer allegedly joked about the defendant’s busy romantic life and made a controversial comment about using condoms. In another case, he reportedly sang a song and made light of the situation, further undermining the seriousness of the court proceedings. The panel also highlighted instances where Farmer referenced inappropriate comedy sketches and shared what were described as “exceptionally bad jokes.”

Aside from his questionable behavior in court, Farmer was accused of exceeding his allowed judicial leave days, failing to respect due process, and showing bias in certain cases. Despite the allegations, Farmer’s attorney defended the jokes as attempts to lighten the mood and reduce stress for defendants, claiming they were not offensive or degrading. However, following the investigation, Farmer acknowledged the inappropriateness of some of his remarks and issued apologies.

After reflecting on the situation, Farmer admitted that some of his jokes were “racy” and inappropriate for a courtroom setting. The Florida Supreme Court ultimately decided to suspend Farmer without pay, citing his misconduct and unfitness to serve as a judge. Farmer’s attorney emphasized that the jokes were meant to be light-hearted but acknowledged that some crossed the line, leading to Farmer’s regret and apologies.

As the suspension takes effect, Farmer’s future as a judge remains uncertain, with the Florida Supreme Court’s decision reflecting the importance of upholding professionalism and integrity within the judiciary. The case serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with holding a position of authority and the consequences of behavior that undermines the principles of justice and fairness.
