Screen Gems, known for its ’90s slasher film Urban Legend, is set to reboot the movie for modern audiences. The division is currently in the early stages of developing a new version of the 1998 feature, with Shanrah Wakefield on board to write the script. Gary Dauberman, the producer behind successful horror franchises like It and Annabelle, will produce the reboot alongside Neal Moritz, who was involved in the original production.
The original Urban Legend, directed by Jamie Blanks, was a horror film centered around a New England university plagued by a killer who drew inspiration from popular urban legends of the time. These legends, such as death by consuming Pop Rocks and soda or being chased by a gang for not turning on headlights, added a chilling factor to the narrative.
The 1998 film boasted a talented cast including Jared Leto, Joshua Jackson, Alicia Witt, Michael Rosenbaum, Rebecca Gayheart, and Tara Reid. While it achieved commercial success, it faced tough competition from other horror films of the era like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Despite this, the movie spawned two sequels.
Although specific plot details for the reboot remain under wraps, sources suggest that the new film will explore how urban legends evolve in a digital age. This fresh take aims to delve into the impact of technology and social media on the spread and transformation of folklore.
Gary Dauberman, a prominent figure in the horror genre, has a proven track record with hit films like It and The Nun. His recent project, Until Dawn, a video game adaptation, showcased his ability to craft suspenseful narratives. Dauberman’s production company, Coin Operated, has a partnership with Screen Gems/Sony, solidifying his role in shaping the future of horror cinema.
Shanrah Wakefield, the writer tapped for the Urban Legend reboot, is represented by CAA, Untitled, and attorney Darren Trattner. With Dauberman’s producing expertise and Wakefield’s fresh perspective, the new iteration of Urban Legend promises to offer a contemporary spin on the classic horror tale.
As the entertainment industry continues to embrace nostalgia and reimagining of beloved classics, the Urban Legend reboot represents a strategic move by Sony to tap into the enduring appeal of horror franchises. With the right blend of nostalgia and innovation, this modern retelling has the potential to captivate both longtime fans and a new generation of horror enthusiasts.
