History Colorado’s Creeporado offers a unique blend of historical oddities and spooky entertainment for Denverites. The event, now in its second year, was the brainchild of Rachael Storm, head of curatorial services at History Colorado Center. Storm’s own background working in a museum in her youth provided the perfect foundation for curating a collection of strange and fascinating artifacts for Creeporado.
The museum’s extensive collection, dating back to its founding in 1879, includes a variety of peculiar items that rarely see the light of day. From mountain man dentures to creepy dolls and relics from Colorado’s nuclear history, History Colorado boasts an array of curiosities that capture the state’s eclectic past.
What started as a modest idea for a small event quickly grew into a popular attraction, drawing nearly 900 attendees in its inaugural year. This year, Creeporado aims to accommodate larger crowds with timed-entry ticketing and a diverse range of activities for visitors of all ages.
Attendees can expect live music from the band Ghosts of Matchless Mine, known for their dark indie/folk sound that sets the eerie mood for the evening. The event will feature multiple bars, a Makers Space for crafting crime dioramas, and a Night Market for shopping spooky goods.
One of the main highlights of Creeporado is a scavenger hunt that takes participants on a quest to help Mike the Headless Chicken find his head. Mike, a famous Colorado legend from the 1940s, achieved fame for surviving 18 months without a head and continues to be celebrated with an annual festival in Fruita.
Storm emphasizes that Creeporado not only offers a night of entertainment but also serves as an introduction to History Colorado for many first-time visitors. The museum aims to engage the community with its rich history, sparking curiosity and conversations about the past.
The second annual Creeporado is set to take place at the History Colorado Center on September 26, featuring a “kids happy hour” at the start of the evening. With a diverse lineup of activities and exhibits, Creeporado promises a memorable experience for those looking to explore the quirky and macabre side of Colorado’s history.
