Alpine Village Evacuated Amid Landslide Threat, Including Rescued Livestock

Swiss authorities recently undertook a unique evacuation operation in the face of a potential landslide threat looming over an Alpine village. Approximately 300 individuals, along with various livestock, were swiftly relocated to safety. Among the evacuees were 190 sheep, 26 cows, and around 20 rabbits, including a cow named “Loni” who required airlifting via helicopter due to injuries.

The village of Blatten, nestled in the southern Lötschental valley, found itself at risk as an unstable mass of rock and a glacier posed imminent danger. The community, led by Mayor Matthias Bellwald, demonstrated remarkable solidarity in executing the evacuations promptly and efficiently. This isn’t the first time such a crisis has gripped the region. In 2023, residents of Brienz were evacuated as a colossal mass of rock threatened the village. Last year, Brienz faced evacuation once again due to the looming danger of a rockslide. Such incidents underscore the vulnerability of Alpine communities to natural disasters and the critical importance of proactive measures to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
