A group of experts in conspiracy theories and human behavior from the University of Bath will be participating in a panel discussion at an event focused on climate-related films. The event, scheduled for March 16 in Bath, aims to address issues surrounding the climate hoax, denial, and anxiety.
Dr. Tim Hill, an authority in conspiracy theories from the University of Bath School of Management, and Caroline Hickman, a lecturer specializing in young people’s relationships with nature and the climate crisis, will be among the panelists at The Little Theatre Cinema. Organized by Cornwall Climate Care, the event will showcase three short films that delve into the impact of climate change on the younger generation and the challenges faced by scientists in combating misinformation and denial in climate discussions.
The films to be screened include “#ClimateScam?” which questions why a significant number of individuals still perceive climate change as a hoax despite the evident climate-related calamities reported in the media. Additionally, “Climate Anxiety” will feature discussions by young people, parents, and professionals on their encounters with climate anxiety. Another film, “Plan Z: From lab coats to handcuffs,” narrates the story of scientists resorting to civil disobedience to alert the public about climate breakdown after being disregarded by the government.
Dr. Tim Hill expressed his enthusiasm for contributing to the discussion, emphasizing the significance of shedding light on the mechanisms that render even the most far-fetched conspiracy theories believable to certain individuals. Caroline Hickman highlighted the urgency of understanding the climate crisis from the perspective of young people, framing it not just as an environmental concern but also as a human rights issue.
The event, slated for March 16 at 4 pm, is expected to provide a platform for in-depth conversations on pressing issues such as conspiracy theories, misinformation, and denial surrounding climate change. The panel discussion and subsequent Q&A session aim to engage both experts and the audience in critical dialogue on these complex and interconnected topics.
