A tragic incident shook the community of Yarrawonga last Tuesday, resulting in the death of a 45-year-old man in what authorities described as a “freak accident” at the Yarrawonga Regional Park’s Loop Track. The man lost his life when a large tree branch fell on the vehicle he was in, causing fatal injuries, while his wife and teenage son sustained injuries in the incident that occurred around 7:10 pm.
Sergeant Shaun Hillier from the Wangaratta Highway Patrol provided details to the media, explaining that the family was trying to leave the Loop Track to avoid an approaching storm when the tragic event unfolded. The fallen branch struck their moving vehicle as they sought an alternate route due to an obstruction caused by another tree. Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man could not be saved, while his wife and son managed to exit the vehicle before receiving medical attention.
The injured family members, residents of the local area, were promptly transported to Wangaratta hospital with injuries that were deemed non-life-threatening. Sgt Hillier extended condolences to the family and assured that support was being provided to them and all those affected by the accident. He emphasized that the family had done nothing wrong and were simply trying to navigate the storm, highlighting the unpredictability of such natural disasters in forested areas.
The police will conduct a thorough investigation and prepare a comprehensive report for the coroner to outline the sequence of events leading up to the fatality. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected dangers that can arise even during routine activities, underscoring the need for caution and preparedness in the face of unforeseen circumstances.
As the community mourns the loss of a cherished member, the authorities are committed to offering assistance and ensuring that all necessary support is provided to those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. The incident serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety measures in mitigating the risks posed by unforeseeable events.
