The 45-year-old father was behind the wheel trying to evacuate with his wife and teenage son when the accident occurred. According to Wangaratta Highway Patrol Sergeant Shaun Hillier, the family’s decision to escape through the route where the fatal accident happened was due to another path being obstructed by a fallen tree.
