A recent email leak to RNZ has exposed a crackdown within the public service aimed at curbing information leaks. The leaked email, sent by a department head, outlined the warning from Public Service Commissioner Sir Brian Roche against unauthorized disclosures of information. Sir Roche emphasized the importance of upholding the core values of the Public Service and highlighted the detrimental impact of leaks on government operations.

In response to the leak, Sir Brian Roche affirmed his commitment to taking firm action against individuals responsible for leaking information. He stressed the need for public service chief executives to thoroughly investigate any leaks and take appropriate measures, including terminating employment when necessary. According to Sir Roche, leaking information undermines the government and violates the code of conduct, affecting the entire public service sector.

The leaked email, dated 22 May, coincided with previous instances of information disclosures, including a court injunction on an RNZ report regarding a confidential pre-Budget decision. Other leaked documents mentioned in the email highlighted various issues, such as potential program closures and internal feedback on health data team cuts. The recurrence of leaks underscored the challenges faced by the public service in maintaining confidentiality and trust.

Francisco Hernandez, the Green Party’s public service spokesperson, viewed the leaks as symptomatic of a broader issue within the public sector. Hernandez criticized the government for disregarding evidence and advice from public servants, leading to frustration and a lack of respect for democratic principles. While acknowledging the negative impact of leaks, Hernandez noted that they reflected deeper systemic issues within the public service.

Concerns were also raised about potential ministerial interference in public service matters, which could contribute to a culture of frustration and discontent among officials. Hernandez emphasized the importance of maintaining the neutrality of the public service and ensuring that ministers respect evidence-based advice provided by public servants.

Public Service Minister Judith Collins was called upon to address the situation, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to addressing leaks while upholding the integrity and independence of the public service. The leaked email from Sir Brian Roche to public sector chief executives underscored the seriousness of the issue and the collective responsibility to prevent unauthorized information disclosures.
As the public service grapples with the challenge of preventing leaks and maintaining trust, the leaked crackdown on information disclosures has sparked debates about the underlying issues affecting the sector. The need for transparency, accountability, and respect for democratic processes remains crucial in fostering a healthy and effective public service environment.
