The unsettling moment was captured on video by a bystander, showing four cyclists colliding with barricades at high velocity during the street circuit race’s final corner. The impact caused one rider to catapult over the barrier and into the onlooking crowd.
Described by South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas as an “awful, freak accident,” the incident unfolded as lead riders navigated the race’s concluding bend without incident, while the following group collided with the barricades. Reports indicate that the cyclists entered the final corner at a speed 20km/h faster than on previous laps, contributing to the unexpected turn of events.
