Spectator Hospitalized in Tour Down Under Freak Accident

A spectator is currently hospitalized following a shocking incident at the Tour Down Under cycling event in Adelaide. The incident, described as an “awful, freak accident” by SA Premier Peter Malinauskas, occurred during a street circuit race when four cyclists collided with barricades at high speed on the final corner. One of the riders went over the barrier and into the crowd, resulting in serious injuries to a woman who was visiting from NSW with her husband.

The race officials reported that the lead riders navigated the final bend safely, but the subsequent group of cyclists crashed into the barricades at a significantly higher speed than in previous laps. The Adelaide parklands circuit, where the incident took place, has historical significance as it was the same circuit used for the inaugural Tour Down Under in 1999, albeit in the opposite direction.

Italian rider Manilo Moro from Team Movistar was among those involved in the crash and was unable to complete the race. He required assistance from a team member to finish the race, indicating the severity of the impact. Moro is currently undergoing further medical evaluation and treatment to assess his condition.

The Tour Down Under, an integral part of the cycling calendar, serves as a prelude to the official Tour and attracts international participants seeking early-season competition. The event, marking its 25th anniversary, is set to commence with a six-stage race starting on Tuesday. Australian cyclist Sam Welsford emerged victorious in the race that took place on Saturday.
