In Taiwan, there exists a set of peculiar buildings that resemble UFOs. Known as the Sanzhi UFO Houses, these structures were never finished. They were intended as a vacation resort targeted at U.S. military personnel.
Construction started in 1978, but the project faced numerous challenges. By 1980, the venture was abandoned, primarily due to financial losses. Various incidents, including car accidents and suicides, added to the project's woes. These events were speculated to be linked to a local superstition regarding the alteration of a nearby dragon sculpture.
Despite their unfinished state, the UFO houses attracted visitors intrigued by their unique design. They became a minor tourist destination, labeled as a ghost town or βruins of the future.β Over time, they even featured in films and video games, cementing their place in popular culture.
The buildings faced demolition in late 2008, although a petition emerged to save one structure for historical purposes. Demolition commenced in December 2008, and by 2010, all the houses were gone. The site is now being redeveloped into a commercial seaside resort and waterpark.
The Sanzhi UFO Houses stand as a testament to ambition turned ghostly, lingering in memory as an unfulfilled dream.
