In Vietnam's Bến Tre province, a monk became the center of a peculiar faith. He reportedly lived solely on coconuts for three years. This monk, known as the Coconut Monk, founded the Coconut Religion in 1963.
He claimed to have created a floating pagoda in the area he called the "Coconut Kingdom." His approach blended elements of Buddhism and Christianity, creating a unique spiritual synthesis. The Coconut Monk was well-known for his eccentricity, often seen in traditional robes while wearing a crucifix around his neck.
Although the religion attracted a number of followers, it was labeled a "cult" by the authorities. At its peak, estimates suggested around 4,000 followers worldwide. The Coconut Monk even ran for president in South Vietnam but withdrew, fearing arrest.
The movement faced a swift demise when the communist government banned it in 1975. The Coconut Monk's death in 1990 marked the end of the religion. Today, the Coconut Estate where he once preached is a tourist destination along the Mekong Delta.
The absurdity of a coconut-based religion remains a curious footnote in Vietnam's spiritual history.
