In 1202, a military order called the Livonian Brothers of the Sword was established in Livonia. This order was composed of warrior monks from northern Germany, tasked with converting local pagan tribes. They fought against the Finnic and Baltic pagans in present-day Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
The order faced moral challenges given that the people they aimed to convert had no prior interactions with Christianity. Their initial role was to protect priests and missionaries, while also maintaining control over the territory. This involved garrisoning newly built castles, yet they had limited claims to the land.
In 1236, the order suffered a significant defeat at the Battle of Saule against the Samogitians and Semigallians. This loss led to the Pope disbanding the remnants of the order in 1237. Surviving members had the option to return to Germany or join the local branch of the Teutonic Order.
Initially, the order operated under rules akin to the Knights Templar, requiring noble birth and vows of obedience, poverty, and celibacy. It included not just knights, but also soldiers and clerics, all governed by a grandmaster and local officials. Their military campaigns began shortly after their formation, including battles against the Lithuanians, where they achieved several victories.
The Brothers built a fortified line along the Daugava River, creating a period of relative peace. However, their presence was met with resistance from local leaders who felt threatened by their growing influence. One notable incident involved King Vetseke, who retaliated against the order by massacring German workers.
Despite their military successes, including victories that seemed to secure peace, the order ultimately could not sustain itself. The combination of fierce local opposition and their eventual defeat marked the end of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword as a significant military power in the region.
