In 19th-century Edinburgh, a dog became famous for reportedly standing vigil at his owner's grave for 14 years. This dog, known as Greyfriars Bobby, belonged to John Gray, a city nightwatchman. After Gray died, Bobby remained at the Greyfriars Kirkyard, earning a reputation as a symbol of loyalty.
Despite the endearing nature of the story, the details remain contentious. Some accounts suggest that the tale has evolved over time, with questions about which John Gray was truly Bobby's owner. While one John Gray was a nightwatchman, another was a farmer. This discrepancy fuels speculation about the authenticity of Bobby’s devotion.
In 1867, the local lord provost took notice of Bobby's loyalty and provided him with a collar, further solidifying his status in the community. Bobby continued to guard John's grave until his own death in 1872 from jaw cancer. He was buried nearby, just inside the kirkyard gate.
A statue and fountain were erected in his honor, commissioned by a philanthropist charmed by his story. However, as time passed, doubts arose regarding the veracity of Bobby's long watch. Some historians argue that the story of his undying loyalty may be embellished, noting that many similar tales of dogs in graveyards existed during that period.
Modern discussions about the story often highlight the distinction between the terrier breeds, suggesting Bobby was more likely a Dandie Dinmont than a Skye Terrier, challenging the traditional image of the dog.
