The village of Moodus, located in Connecticut, has a unique name that translates to 'place of noises.' This name reflects its infamous history of seismic activity. Residents have experienced earthquakes for centuries, with some of the loudest rumblings being heard for miles around.
Before English settlers arrived in 1662, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Mohegans and the Wangunks. The settlers purchased the land for thirty coats, a transaction that would have been quite a bargain today.
During the 19th century, Moodus gained recognition as the 'Twine Capital of America.' The village was home to numerous mills that thrived by harnessing local water power for textile production. The most prominent mill was Brownell & Company, which contributed significantly to the local economy until 1977.
In addition to its industrial past, Moodus was once a summer resort destination. During the mid-20th century, the population of East Haddam swelled as visitors flocked to more than 30 local resorts. These establishments attracted vacationers from nearby states, doubling the population during peak seasons.
However, in 1967, a controversial urban renewal initiative led to the demolition of much of the original village center. The aim was to create a new commercial district, but the changes sparked significant debate among residents.
