Since August 20, 2007, at least twenty detached human feet have been discovered along the shores of the Salish Sea, which spans British Columbia and Washington State. The first foot was found on Jedediah Island, British Columbia. Over the years, feet have also been uncovered in Tacoma and Seattle, Washington.
Investigations by the British Columbia Coroners Service have ruled out foul play in all previous cases. The feet were typically found within sneakers, which were thought to aid in their buoyancy and protect them from rapid decomposition. This unique circumstance allowed these feet to wash ashore relatively intact.
This phenomenon is not entirely new. Historical accounts show similar discoveries dating back more than a century. For instance, a human leg encased in a boot was found on a Vancouver beach in 1887, a site now known as Leg-In-Boot Square.
As of September 2018, 15 feet have been found in the Canadian province of British Columbia between 2007 and 2018, and five in the U.S. state of Washington. Notably, several pairs of feet were matched through DNA analysis. One identified foot belonged to a man reported missing earlier that year. In tragic circumstances, some of the U.S. feet belonged to individuals who had died by suicide or were previously missing persons.
Despite the seemingly bizarre nature of these findings, the B.C. Coroners Service found no evidence of cut marks on the bones, indicating that these feet had likely detached naturally due to decomposition in water. The odds of finding multiple feet in such a manner have been described as extraordinarily rare, prompting the police to label the phenomenon an anomaly.
The story gained international media attention after the discovery of the fifth foot in June 2008. It was subject to much speculation and interest, leading to discussions on various platforms, including talk shows and documentaries. One notable hoax involved a fake foot created from an animal paw stuffed into a shoe, which was later investigated by law enforcement.
This series of discoveries remains a chilling mystery, illustrating the complex and often grim realities of human life and death along the coast.
