An old homeless man sought refuge in an underpass in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. While he was there, a group of youths attacked him and beat him severely. The injuries he sustained were life-threatening, and he ultimately succumbed to them in the cold.
After his death, something strange happened. The numerous rats that inhabited the area were reported to have gathered around the man's body. Accounts claim that they had devoured his face, leaving behind a disturbing scene.
Afterward, witnesses began to report sightings of a ghostly figure in the same underpass. Those who ventured near spoke of eerie sounds, including ratlike squealing and the noise of claws scraping against the walls. This led to the belief that the man's spirit had transformed into the Ratman, haunting the place of his demise.
