In 1931, the SS Baychimo was trapped in pack ice off the coast of Alaska. After the crew abandoned her, they discovered she had somehow broken free. This was only the beginning of Baychimo's strange journey.
Although she was left behind, the ship was spotted numerous times over the following decades. Each encounter revealed glimpses of an eerie persistence. Sightings ranged from Inuit hunters to explorers, all reporting sightings of the ship drifting in the icy waters.
In one instance, a group of Iñupiat boarded her but found themselves trapped for ten days by a storm. Other attempts to salvage her met with bad weather or were thwarted by shifting ice. Baychimo seemed to exist in its own realm, evading capture and defying the odds.
The last recorded sighting occurred in 1969, when she was reportedly found frozen in an ice pack. After that, she vanished from view, and her ultimate fate remains unknown. Despite efforts to locate the ghost ship, no traces of Baychimo have been found, leaving questions about her existence unanswered.
For nearly four decades after her abandonment, the SS Baychimo continued to haunt the Arctic waters, a phantom vessel of the north.
