In 1972, two teenage boys made headlines in Victoria, British Columbia, claiming to have seen a monster at Thetis Lake. They described the creature as having silvery scaled skin, sharp claws, and spikes on its head, eerily similar to the Gill-man from the 1954 film Creature from the Black Lagoon.
The report, published by the Victoria Daily Times, detailed their encounter while swimming at the lake beach during the evening. Interestingly, two other boys fishing nearby also claimed to have spotted the same creature. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police launched an investigation but found no evidence to support the boys' extraordinary claims.
Years later, writer Daniel Loxton contacted one of the boys involved. He learned that the whole incident was fabricated for attention. The description given by the boys matched that of a monster from a television movie called Monster From The Surf, which had aired just four days before their reported sighting. This sensational claim had been inspired by a fictional creature rather than a real-life encounter.
The incident serves as a curious reminder of how easily imagination can blur the line between reality and fiction.
