Social media giant TikTok is taking a new approach to address concerns over its impact on children’s mental health. The company, owned by ByteDance, announced the launch of a meditation feature aimed at improving sleep quality and promoting wellness among its young users.

The meditation exercises, set to activate during sleep hours, will be default for users under 18. If teens are active on the app past 10 p.m., they will be interrupted with guided meditation prompts to encourage healthier digital habits and deter late-night scrolling.

This move comes amidst a backdrop of legal challenges and public scrutiny regarding TikTok’s effects on young users. Several state attorneys general have filed lawsuits alleging that the app is addictive and harmful to children’s well-being, citing risks like depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

Despite proactive measures taken by TikTok to address safety concerns, the platform continues to face criticism from experts and lawmakers. Social psychologists have warned about the negative impact of social media on mental health, particularly in younger demographics.

The app’s future in the U.S. has been uncertain, with regulatory pressures mounting due to data privacy concerns and its Chinese ownership. While facing legal battles and potential bans, TikTok remains operational following executive orders and court decisions.

Governments worldwide are increasingly scrutinizing social media platforms’ influence on young users. Australia, for instance, passed legislation restricting under-16 access to social media, imposing hefty fines on platforms that violate the rule.

In response to mounting pressure, TikTok has pledged support for mental health initiatives by donating ad credits worth $2.3 million to various mental health organizations globally. The company’s efforts aim to promote mental health education and support well-being in the digital sphere.
As TikTok navigates legal challenges and public perception, its push towards wellness features reflects a broader industry trend of social media platforms prioritizing user well-being and digital safety, especially among young audiences.
