In a narrow gorge in Saarland, Germany, there exists a remarkable phenomenon known as the Brennender Berg, or Burning Mountain. This natural monument is home to a coal-seam fire that ignited in 1668 and continues to burn quietly to this day.
The origins of the fire remain somewhat shrouded in mystery. It is believed that spontaneous combustion, likely fueled by the pressure and decomposition associated with coal mining, started the blaze. One local legend suggests that a shepherd's fire at a tree stump inadvertently spread to the coal seam beneath the ground.
Attempts to extinguish the fire were made, but they proved futile. Instead of blazing flames, the fire emits a gentle glow, visible through cracks in the rocky surface. Over the years, the intensity of the fire has diminished, particularly by the end of the 18th century. However, under certain weather conditions, smoke still wafts from the area, and warm air can be felt escaping from some crevices.
The Brennender Berg has since become a point of interest for tourists and locals alike. It attracts visitors for excursions and school trips, with a convenient parking area located near the Dudweiler cemetery. Notably, the famed poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the site in 1770. His vivid description of the experience highlights the sulfurous smell and glowing rocks he encountered, as well as the warm ground beneath his feet.
This burning mountain serves as a fascinating testament to the power of nature and the enduring legacy of a fire that has quietly persisted for over three centuries.
