Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc became the 70th Grand Master of the Order of St. John in 1775. His tenure was marked by challenges, particularly the upheaval caused by the French Revolution. Rohan's health deteriorated significantly after he suffered a stroke in 1792.
During his leadership, he made notable contributions, such as elevating the village of Żebbuġ to city status in 1777 and initiating constitutional reforms. His efforts to gain the respect of the Maltese people made him a popular figure.
Rohan's health worsened in the years leading to his death on 14 July 1797. His last words expressed a poignant recognition of the Order's decline. Just months later, the French invaded Malta, ultimately expelling the Order he had dedicated his life to serving.
