According to Allen, the USS Eldridge was subjected to an experiment aimed at making it invisible. He asserted that the ship not only vanished but also teleported to another location. The tale emerged in 1955 when Allen sent a handwritten book filled with annotations to a Navy research organization.
Those annotations referenced discussions among three fictional characters debating UFO technology and the nature of alien races. Allen later reached out to a UFO author, claiming the ship's crew suffered side effects such as insanity and intangibility.
People took interest, and the Office of Naval Research investigated. They found no evidence of the experiment and noted contradictions in Allen's story. In a twist, Allen later admitted he had crafted the annotations to frighten the author.
