William Ellsworth Robinson, known by the stage name Chung Ling Soo, created a persona that captivated audiences while masking a shocking truth. He donned traditional Chinese attire, painted his face, and spoke little English, all while claiming to be a Chinese magician. However, he was an American who embraced yellowface, a performance that managed to deceive many.

His career took off in Europe, where he became one of the highest-paid performers on the vaudeville circuit. Robinson's act drew inspiration from fellow magician Ching Ling Foo, whom he had previously tried to challenge. The rivalry was intense, highlighted by Robinson's imitation of Foo’s illusions, which eventually led to public embarrassment for Foo, as he could not garner support against Robinson.

Robinson's most infamous illusion, β€œCondemned to Death by the Boxers,” involved a seemingly dangerous bullet-catching trick that would ultimately lead to his demise. During a performance, assistants would present guns, and audience members were invited to mark bullets before they were fired at him. The illusion's tragic end occurred when something went wrong during the trick, resulting in Robinson's accidental death.

The absurdity of his life lies not only in his elaborate deception but also in the manner of his death, which was a grim twist on the very illusion that had brought him fame.
