During World War II, a bear named Wojtek became an unlikely soldier. He was purchased by Polish soldiers from an Iranian shepherd. This bear accompanied the 2nd Polish Corps to Italy.

Wojtek became known for his remarkable ability to carry ammunition crates during the Battle of Monte Cassino. He mimicked the soldiers around him, lifting heavy boxes that typically required multiple men. His efforts earned him a promotion to corporal, making him a celebrity among military leaders.

Wojtek's origins trace back to a Polish refugee camp in Iran, where he was adopted by soldiers. The bear was initially fed from an old vodka bottle and grew fond of beer, cigarettes, and even saluting. He traveled alongside the Polish army through various countries, becoming an unofficial mascot.

After the war, Wojtek moved to Scotland and lived at the Edinburgh Zoo. His popularity continued, as he was often visited by former soldiers and journalists. He understood Polish and responded to it, delighting those who came to see him.

Wojtek passed away in 1963, having grown to an impressive size. Memorials and statues were later erected in his honor, celebrating the legacy of the soldier bear who served with distinction.
